Questions: Genealogy
These are the questions I keep asking. I don't know which one is the question yet, maybe the relation between them is.
A system (a surgery, a law, a grammar, a model) knows only what its procedural account can say about itself. What does a body know about a system, from inside it, that the system can't know about itself? And how can art make it available to others?
A body passes through irreversible reduction (surgical, administrative, linguistic, computational). What is lost, what is invented, what relation holds between the fragments?
How can what escapes representation become perceptible through representation?
What happens to bodies as they slip through computation, understood here as systems of recognition that render bodies legible?
Maybe the real question isn't whether other people believe my existence. Maybe it's whether I can believe this is one continuous life.
How do I find continuity again, now that part of me is gone?
How does a body reorganize itself after irreversible change?
What changes during a passage? What is lost? What is invented? What stays the same?
What happens to a human body going through computational processes? Where is the body at the end?
Is the shift in nature between input and output the artwork?
Do you slip or slop?
What can the science paper see that I can't? What can I see that the science might not? Where do our interpretations diverge?
What do you think you are seeing that I might not be seeing? What do you think I am seeing that you might not be seeing?
